Our Plastic Free culture
In 2018, One Plymouth launched a special ‘One Plymouth Cup’ in partnership with Redrok and the National Marine Aquarium.
A universal re-usable cup (and later bottle to) that was welcomed everywhere. The aim was to help reduce the use of throwaway cups and it was extra special to help encourage people to visit their local coffee shops by having ‘cup’ benefits and discounts.
Some of the ‘One Plymouth Cups’ had ‘prizes’ inside along with a 25p donation to the National Marine Aquarium on every cup sold to help with their marine conservation agenda.
A number of businesses across the city got onboard with option to have their brand on the cups including City College Plymouth, Plymouth City Bus (every driver had a red cup), Plymouth Community Homes, St John Ambulance and lots of others we also linked up with the Plymouth Gossip Girls which has a huge following to release a limited edition version with their logo to their followers to with an event held at The Treasury.
Due to the events of 2020, the team had to scale back but is keen to relaunch with new cups and bottles a range to help kick-start where they left off and are keen to work with the Plastic Free Directory to help spread the word encouraging business and the public in all doing their bit to help Plymouth reduce especially single use plastics across the city.
As a group, One Plymouth has removed, eliminated or or replaced the following three items from everyday use:
- Removed single-use cleaning wipes (eliminated)
- Refilled all spray bottles and sanitiser at zero waste shops (replaced single-use)
- Removed single-use disposable camera lens wipes and replaced with refillable bottle solution and cloth (eliminated)
They are also phasing out plastic-coated business cards handed out to people during events when photos taken and swapping to a QR code system. (Using up previous stock and will not replace them).
In future, the team plans to address the following items or challenges:
- Plan to have all uniform tops made from plastic-free fibres
- Expand the ‘One Plymouth’ reusable cups and bottles launched previously and create new campaigns to help support the Plastic Free Plymouth pledges and encourage update.
